Visual Arts Principles of Design

The students at Wayland Elementary are expected to understand the principles of visual art design and the vocabulary related to each of the principles. The more students understand the priniciples of design, the greater their ability to create, and interpret or critique the artwork of other artists.

Principles of Design:

1. Pattern
The repetitions or differences used in artwork

2. Emphasis
The Focal Point (s) in pieces of artwork
The Most Important aspect or object in a piece of artwork


3. Contrast
The difference between elements of artwork
Color Contrast, Shape Contrast, etc.


4. Balance
The symmetry and asymmetry of artwork

Elementary students will not study the following priniciples of design.
These will be studied in middle school and high school.
