New Medication Guidelines Effective July 1, 2025

Dear Parents/Guardians

New compliance guidelines from the Kentucky Board of Nursing, Kentucky Department for Public and the Kentucky Board of Education have been implemented beginning this school year; these changes will cover how over the counter (OTC) medications and prescription medication are accepted at school.

Ohio County Schools has made the necessary changes to our Permission for Medication forms to reflect the requirement for both parent and physician permission for all prescribed and over the counter (OTC) medications.

All medications, with the exclusion of those medications on our Consent for Non-Prescription Medication  and First Aid Medication  forms that have standing orders signed by our Medical Director, will be required to have both a parent and health care provider's signature on one of the following forms.

  1. Permission Form for Prescribed or Over-the-Counter Medication which can be picked up or sent home with your child from the school nurse’s office.

  2. An Ohio County Schools Individual Health Plan (IHP) that can be completed for chronic health conditions (headaches, stomach problems, or other health issues for which your child may need an OTC medication or prescription at school. The IHP is available from the school nurse’s office.

  3. A Written Statement and written on letterhead by the child’s healthcare provider as a part of a health plan, DMMP, 504, or IEP.

Parents/guardians (or someone designated by the parent from the school pickup list) can always bring and administer a dose of an OTC medication to your child during the school day. If you choose to keep a medication at school to be provided by school staff, you will need to have one of the forms listed above with the necessary signatures.

We appreciate your understanding and patience as we make changes to a safer administration of medication in Ohio County Schools.

Yvonne Smith, RN

Please see the Consent for Non-Prescription Medications Provided by the School form to see the medications that DO NOT need a provider’s signature.
